Obituary of Christopher Jon McMackin

It is with much disbelief that the large and loving family of Christopher McMackin announce his passing July 13th at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a sudden health issue.

Born May 12, 1969 in Saint John, he is survived by his loving wife of seventeen years, Kimberley VanWart, his in-laws Shirley and Gordon VanWart,  brother-in-law Jim (Wendy), sister-in-law Tracy, all of with whom he shared many cherished memories. His mother Ruth McMackin and siblings Michelle Anderson, Joanne (Lloyd) Jackson, Michael (Alison) McMackin also share in the shock and sadness that they have lost their treasured youngest child and sibling. Also mourning the loss of their respected uncle is a small but loving group of nephews and nieces on both the VanWart and McMackin sides of the family - Devin and Brianna VanWart, Brodie, Emily and Claire Anderson, Sarah and Carter McGuire, Amy, Kevin and Matthew McMackin. Predeceased last October by his father, Jim McMackin, whom he served with devotion.  Chris is also survived by too many aunts, uncles and cousins to count, let alone name.

A graduate of Kennebecasis Valley High School, he was proud to receive the Governor’s General Award when he graduated from UNBSJ in 1995. Upon graduation he quickly found employment at Irving, working as the Senior Risk Analyst at the time of his passing. A proud Irving employee, his family also recognizes their loss.

To sum up who Chris was in a few words is impossible. He had an incredible sense of humour, a dry wit that evidenced his sharp intelligence. He loved running and kept himself fit and healthy, determined to go into middle age strong and active. He liked to tell stories of his time as a sailor with Kent Lines. He also loved to travel with Kim and together they made many trips to Florida.  He was an example of living a life of unflagging commitment to always doing the right thing coupled with a very strong sense of duty.  He lived this every day in his devotion to his beloved wife and in helping his parents, visiting numerous times a week, aiding them in their senior years. Everyone who met him was left with favourable impressions of his kindness and interest in their lives. He was that rare person who was loved by all.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 between 2-4 and 6-8 at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (849-2119). The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Mark's Church, 171 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis on Thursday, July 18 at 10:00 AM. At Chris’ request and to add some levity to this sad time, we ask that people try to incorporate some colour into their dress. Colourful ties and funky socks for the men are welcome.  Following this a reception will be held in the Church hall with a family burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Norton. In lieu of flowers, donations to The KV Food Basket or The Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
