Obituary of Edgar Manford Friars

It is with heartfelt sorrow that the family of Edgar Manford Friars, of Rothesay, announce his passing on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  Born on December 5, 1938, in Saint John, he was the son of the late Edgar and Priscilla “Pat” (Stevens) Friars.

One of New Brunswick’s legendary skate sharpeners, Edgar was employed with the Town of Rothesay and with the KV Arena for over 35 years until his retirement. From top tier referees and pro hockey players, to figure skaters and speed skaters, those who demanded a sharp blade on ice, brought their skates to Edgar.  “Ike” was an avid hockey player and enjoyed playing softball. He loved playing his guitar, and learned how to play banjo after his retirement. He started to learn the bass in his mid seventies, until his fingers also went into retirement. While Ed loved playing music, he REALLY loved  listening to Blue Grass, just ask his neighbours. Edgar was always on the go with his faithful dog, Nicky. They were the dynamic duo, and if Nicky didn’t know you, she let you know. She was a great friend and protector. One of their favourite past times was playing at the dog park.

Edgar is survived by his sons; Colin (Maria Powell) of Saint John, Jim of Rothesay, and Edgar (Richard) of Toronto, his former wife Linda Legassie, sister Pam Lockhart (Doug) of Quispamsis, sister-in-law Judy Friars of Quispamsis, three grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and extended family. He will be missed by all who knew him. Besides his parents, Edgar is predeceased by his brother Alan Friars, and his dog Nicky.

Resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (506-849-2119) with visiting on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 12-2 PM, with a celebration of Edgar’s life beginning at 2PM in the chapel. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the SPCA. Online condolences may be made at www.kennebecasisfh.com
